 AIA Santa Fe – May 10, 2012 Lunch Topic

Santa Fe local, Simón De Agüero, graduated from St. Michaels High and went on to receive a Bachelor in Fine Arts, Magna Cum Laude from the University of Colorado.  His professional experience began in the non-profit sector developing youth programs and coordinating art and community events for the Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI). The SFAI facility designed by Ricardo Legorreta and local art community influenced him to study architecture. In 2010, he received an M. Arch from The Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) School of Architecture. Simon developed a specialization in Historic Preservation and Fabric Structures. He was awarded the AIA Arizona Graduate Student Portfolio Scholarship and was nominated as a candidate for the 2011 SOM Prize. As owner of SoularchiteXture, he has worked with The FLLW Foundation, Fabric Architecture Magazine, Specialty Fabrics Review Magazine, Magella Real-estate, Tenshon and Lloyd Associates Architects. Fabric Structures:  Textiles in Tension [SF1205]

Program Description:

Fabric as a building material has gained popularity over the past 100 years. This course will include a brief history of fabric structures with precedent setting examples and lead into current examples. The design process and structural issues will be discussed.  Fabric Types/fire ratings, reputable suppliers and experienced design professionals will be included along with specific vocabulary related to Fabric Tensioned Structures.  Sustainable features will be highlighted and the process from designing to detailing will be explained, with particular attention to the desert southwest.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of fabric types, standard details, standard shapes, and a general history of fabric structures.
  2. The pros and cons of three types of fabrics will be highlighted.  The pros and cons of fabric forms will be presented.  Understand and be able to discuss sustainable pros and cons of fabric structures.
  3. List examples of software programs to assist with fabric design.  Discuss material properties and testing methods of fabric structures.
  4. Analyze and assess the durability of fabric (and its associated warranties).  Discuss maintenance and repair as compared to a non-fabric building.
