The Santa Fe Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has renamed its meeting and office space at 444 Galisteo Street as the Phillipe Register Center for Architecture. The name change was announced by Executive Director Tom Spray at a meeting of the Chapter on March 12, 2020. The change was made as part of a gift of $20,000 to the Chapter from Paul Stevenson Oles FAIA, in honor of Mr. Register.
 

Phillipe Register moved to Santa Fe in 1955 and formed his own architecture firm in 1960. He was active in the Santa Fe design community until his death in 2006, and worked on many projects at the College of Santa Fe, where he designed numerous buildings including the Greer Garson Theatre and the Fogelson Library Center. He also developed the Master Plan for the Monastery of Christ in the Desert in Abiquiu, which is the site of his final resting place.

 

Mr Oles commented that “Phillipe was my first employer and mentor in Santa Fe in 1960, and I was his first employee. He had a tremendous impact on the architectural community of Santa Fe for more than 25 years. As a life-long friend of Phillipe, the naming of the headquarters of the Santa Fe Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in honor of his contribution seems fitting, since he did so much for his adopted city, and mine.”
 

In addition, Mr. Oles announced a gift of $5,000 to Friends of Architecture Santa Fe, to be used for programming by the organization, and to advocate for outstanding architecture in the City.
